Guidelines for Exhibiting Artwork at the 3rd Floor Averitt Corridor Gallery
WHO: Any current member of the SRAA (dues paid for the current year.) A single exhibitor is preferred but multiple artists may exhibit at a time, if desired. Length of time for your exhibit will depend on how many members are participating that year.
WHERE: Located on the 3rd floor of The Averitt Center directly across from the elevators the SRAA wall space is 15 feet wide from door to door, and equipped with picture rod hangars (like on the West Main Gallery far wall.) Most hangars currently fall within an 8 foot width. Artists are welcome to move hangers as needed depending on the size of their art.
INSTALLATION: Items must be installed during Averitt Center hours; 9 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday.
All art must be able to hang on the wall display system. It is vital your pieces have a wire hanger on the back to hang properly. Saw-tooth hangers are not allowed.
All pieces should be hung consistently at eye level for a short person (due to wheelchair access) This would be with your center of height being at 51-53”. So if your painting is 24” tall, your painting’s center (12”) would be at 52” from the floor.
LABELS: All art must be labeled. Labels should be on white card stock and be about 2” x 3-4” although they could be a little larger, especially if you have a story about your image or technique. Artists may use the SRAA blank tags stored at the West Main Gallery if desired.
Choose an easy to read font (16 – 24 size) and include the following information:
● Artist Name
● Title of Piece
● Media
● Size
● Date (year work was created)
● Price / OR NFS or From the Collection of…. (to indicate the work is not for sale)
Attach the labels to the wall at a consistent height with painters tape rolled double behind the label.
You may attach a label or your business card to the bottom right side of the back (reverse side) of your artwork for gallery staff in the event your painting is sold. Otherwise, please leave your business cards at home. Do not tuck a business card into the frame or stick it onto the front of your painting.
The Averitt Center has a paper cutter on the second floor that SRAA members can use if needed.
ARTIST STATEMENT: If only one artist is displaying, an artist statement with a photo, framed 8” x 10” (or so), completes the information viewers seek. Hang it with the display. If several artists are sharing a wall, no artist statement is necessary.
ARTIST BIO: Alternately, artists are welcome to post their photo and bio if desired. There is a 5x7 plexiglass display piece hung landscape style for your info. SRAA most likely has one you could use if desired.
PR/ MARKETING: Snap a photo of your exhibit and/or a selfie with the exhibit to post on social media, including the SRAA Facebook site. A photo will also serve as inventory control so you will remember which art is on exhibit.
